New NC gas station starts price war

ABC7 News -- MARION, NC (KGO) -- In North Carolina they are experiencing an event you probably only heard about from your grandfather. There is a gas war going on in the little city of Marion. A new gas station, Murphy USA, set its price low a couple weeks back and keeps lowering it. The price is now, $3.19 and that is forcing other nearby gas stations to lower their price, but they've only gotten down to $3.39.

"Oh yeah, it's been crazy, you think this was a grocery store and it's about to snow or something," said Maleah Ramsey, a North Carolina resident.

Murphy USA says it's a way for the new business to be noticed in the community.

There seems to be a gas war in my home town. I have never before seen the differential between the lowest priced gas station and the highest priced gas station (BP) which peaked at a 36 cent differential two weeks ago.

I can remember gas wars getting the price down to 15 cents a gallon! Now I'd be thrilled with $3.19. After jumping the price $3.89 on Tuesday, the prices seem to be settling down a little.

All Shell stations here are giving a 10 cents per gallon discount if purchase with Ralph's supermarket cards. This week, they double the savings for the holiday travel.

Although what I just read about the company, it doesn't say it is owned by Walmart, but have you noticed that they are generally located in their parking lots. The way the employees talk about them, it sure sounds like a Walmart operation.

Poor writing.

And prices here are $3.33 and lower at many gas stations, and the Murphy USA closest is $3.31.
Several others are $3.28. These lower prices are just a natural decline in the gas prices as oil prices decrease.

And the prices are STILL 30 cents higher than they were last December.

Wisc has a minimum 6% mark up law. Gone are the days of the mid 60's when I sold regular for 19.9 and made a half cent a gallon. Usual price was 29.9. The oil co I bought from took a little loss. Think I usually made around 6 cents per and every thing was full service.

Just like walmart to open up and cut prices to drive all other businesses out and then raise their prices.

It's all fun and games until the other stations go out of business. Then you are left with only one station, and you are at their mercy. That's the Wal-mart way.

I remember back in the late 60's, on Woodward Ave. in Detroit they had gas wars and gas got down to nineteen cents per gallon. You could fill up for $2.50!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
