How much farther would you drive to save 20¢/gal (5¢/L) on fuel?
I'm not willing to go out of my way
Less than 2 miles (3 km)
2 - 4 miles (3 - 6 km)
4 - 6 miles (6 - 10 km)
6 - 10 miles (10 - 16 km)
More than 10 miles (16 km)
It depends on other factors as well
I don't purchase motor fuel

I have changed the direction of where to my errands because of instant price jumps many times higher than 20 cents. I can get to the same name retailers to hit the ones by Sam's Club as they normally don't raise till closing even then not as much. Just this Monday the jump was to 3.35 I bought @ 3.05. The spread has been even bigger than this. I don't want to buy from Speedway when I can because of the price jumps only to drop with in hours later. If I had been one of the sucker that paid the higher price I would be a little peeved & I can't help think they are.

Up to 18 miles depending on circumstances, like if I can justify going to some business or restaurant in the area where the low prices are.

That's the break even point I've come up with for my car's mileage versus the savings.

I play this game all the time in Seattle where gas prices can change by $0.30 per gallon in 2-3 miles. When prices start rising to $3.99, I'll drive to get $3.65. I'm saving about $5.00. At three fills a month, that's $15.

I haven't bought gas according to price for years, ever since I started going out of my way to avoid ethanol. That's hard enough-- doable but rare enough that when I find E-free gas I just use it, regardless of price, since there is no E10 cheap enough to make up for the loss in fuel efficiency.

If you factor in the cost of your time, driving more than 2 miles out of the way would not pay the 20 cents a gallon extra.

It wouldn't be cost efficient to drive to far and then drive back.

The nearet gas stations are 20 km from my place [4 stations] There is pretty fierce competition [same pricing, but, lots of promotional things & some on short notice] Also; I try to kill 2 birds with one stone & do shopping.

I would drive 6 to 10 miles especially if there were someplace I was interested in visiting in the area.

Since my purchases are from 75 to 250 gallons each time there is no doubt I will take a detour if I know of a lower priced fuel outlet. I monitor prices every couple of days so I can try take advantage of a drop or an increase in diesel that's about to happen.

The gas stations in my area don't have a diffrence of $0.20/gal. And even at that is not worth it. If it was $0.50/gal, or more, then will be another story. Keep in mind the extra miles, extra time and extra tear and wear on my car. Is it really worth it?

I'll drive up to around 5 miles I guess. However, I said that it depends on other factors. If my tank is almost empty, if there's something else I would do around that location. During summer I'll get in my car and drive, but in winter I'll only go if I'm already driving/about to drive.

$.20 less would only save me about $1.50, and time is money...so it's hardly worth it for me to go out of my way. Now, I MIGHT see if there is an errand that would take me toward a cheaper gas station, so I'm not going out of my way for less then 2 bucks...

I try to watch the open market gas prices so I know when the prices will be falling so I don't fillup with higher price gas knowing it will be falling and vice versa if it goes up.

Because I have way too much time on my hands, I've figured that, when filling my tank, a penny difference equates to about one extra mile of fuel. So, I suppose, I'd be willing to go 20 miles out of my way for a 20 cent difference in price.

That's round trip, of course. The question isn't clear whether the options are one-way or both, but I assumed both. So, ten miles one way, twenty miles both. I just picked more than ten miles to cover both options. :)

depends on how much in what car I'm driving plus to consider the extra time. 10 miles equals 20 miles @ $3.00 + gallon in my 8 cyl maybe not.

I'm like HuoXingC, I'll drive 4-6 miles for gas on the Peninsula of SF Bay but fill up when convenient. The question says 20¢ savings but I've never seen a differential like that so when I get there, I get there.

I live in Oakland, but I've only ever filled up gas in Fremont because it's less expensive there. Obviously, I'm not going to drive 25 miles to get gas. Instead, I wait until I'm already there (I work and go to school in Fremont) to fill up gas. Thanks to Gas Buddy, I know of a station right off the freeway that has the least expensive Top Tier gas, so I'm not even going out of my way. *(^_^)*

...and when I find that I'm running out of gas while I'm still in Oakland, I just don't drive my car so that I save just enough to make one trip to school/work.

I search Gas Buddy and plan my trips accordingly. Usually don't have to go much out of the way if I plan it right.

Where I lie in tsap County, I pass by a handful of gas stations everyday, and my car (358,000 miles and counting) runs just fine on ARCO gas and so I technically can pass by two of them (6th & Naval and Hwy 303 & Fairgrounds) everyday. The third one is in the opposite direction (and usually is a1-5 cents higher, tho sometimes it went cheaper then the other two) but can rearrange my route to go there if need be. So its just a matter of whether The Naval one or Hwy 303 is the cheaper.

When I drive to Tacoma/Seattle, I make it a point to go to the ARCO station, now its Pyramid Gold, off of the Portland exit from I-5 where it's known to be 5-25 cents cheaper. This station is 35 miles away plus a bridge toll.

I use the GasBuddy app on my iPhone to check the prices and make strategic decisions, like time, money, wear & tear, and the weather.

Last thing I want to do is drive out of my way, when I'm tired, late at night, done with work, and it's cold and raining sideways to get some gas!!!

So, to answer the question, I won't go to far out of my way within Kitsap County, but when in Tacoma, I will rearrange my route to hit a certain station.

So I say from 1-10 miles perhaps, if IT's worth it. :)

In our area the closest place to get gas is about 1.5 miles, but a country store and the owner is known as being a cheat [also not the way we usually travel. The next closest places actual gas stations are about 6 miles. We usually go to the main gas stations 8 miles away, beside the highway, even thought a little bit farther away, we pass by this location more often and the prices are typically cheaper. When in the city I routinely drive to the Kroger or Costco 4 miles away to get gas even though there are closer stations and I also do some shopping while there.

I get pretty good gas mileage and have a small tank, so 20 cents would mean a savings of less than a dollar most times. I don't really drive very far out of my way for any price but, if I might have another reason to drive to another area of town, I will go there, and fill up in that area at the same time.

I usually get ~10 gallons, so that would be $2 saving. $2 is roughly half a gallon, that will take me 20 miles, so if I went to a station 10 miles away, then I'd be at 0... financially, but would have wasted my time driving 10 miles there, and 10 back... so I wouldn't go further than 4-5 miles.

It depends on how badly I need gas. At about $3.20 per gallon and at about 1/3 of a tank it doesn't make financial snese to go more than about 10 or 12 miles. In actuallity I will and do drive 2 or 3 miles out of the way. I like to support those that help hold the line on price gouging.
