Come to think of it, if money were no object, why not have a custom-made car instead of something 'off the rack'? Sultans and shieks do it all the time.
I could order a one-off electric-diesel hybrid V12 Bugatti Veyron. What's *another* one million dollars to an insanely rich person? ;)

the key here is "money no object". if i _could_ buy an alternative-fueled vehicle, i would, so that is what i picked here. since it is very unlikely that i'll be able to do that, i'll settle for a relatively efficient gas-burner.

hi MooseFM ... do sky cars really exist? I would totally love that! I've always wanted to fly. I thought that was still just a thing from "Back to the Future Part 2."

I would definitely decide on an alternative fuel type vehicle. I am very earth conscience and I would love to have a car that runs on solar energy. I'm not sure what would happen though if it were cloudy as it is often here in South Dakota especially during the winter months. Perhaps a way to store the solar power ... I would love to learn more about this. I know the University of Iowa has done a lot in the area of solar cars.

Hey gasman14, your daily post of “Alternative Fuel” since December 14th is suspect. I’m beginning to sense that you may be someone that I encountered on another post a while ago but you used a different handle. Am I correct?

If you have more money than yes you'll increase your carbon footprint but if you have unlimited money you can invest in ways to reduce it. So it begs to ask why would you get anything that wasn't from a non-renewable resource.

When I read the question, I read Given money was not an object at face value. Meaning I had more money than I could ever know what to do with.
With the responses, I think many must have read it as, "With no other changes in your life" what vehcile would you want for free, if you were not allowed to sell it?"
Why else would people say things like, I don't want an electic/fuel cell car, because they are not tested.
I'm unsure about the people that saw what I have is fine. Either they have enough money and already got exactly what they want, or they don't think they should enjoy life.
I understand those that need pickups for their living. But here in Phoenix, and I'm guessing in many areas, people drive pickups and never put anything in the back that couldn't fit in my Vibe.
I originally said I would start with a upgraded Tesla and then get tons of other "toys". However, if this is more in line with reality, and I simply won a car I would take the most expensive one out there that was marketable, so I could sell it.
If I could have only one car that I had to use, and pay for all maintenance, I would probably get the Prius. It has been around long enough, so it is tested, and I am assuming it has full maintence support of Toyota.
Now, it someone would say you can have a Prius or the cash equivalent, I would take the cash. My Vibe already does pretty good.

MooseFM – You got it right when you said that you would buy a “Sky Car and just fly everywhere” and you can bet that I would too! The original post assumes that price is not a problem (e.g. you have lots and lots of money) so you can have whatever you want. I would use my “Sky Car” to travel the globe to visit all the sites that I donate money to (kids programs, environmental recycling plants, medical centers, etc.) so I could keep track of how my money is being used. Sure I would donate to build the “clean” transportation vehicle of the future, but I’d ride in comfort in my “sky mobile” as I traversed the globe. Show me someone who thinks they’d still drive a ’94 Honda when “price is no object” and I’ll show you someone who is not able to grasp the reality of what unlimited money would be.

There are two ways to take this question. If you indead had Oprah's or Bill Gates money then yes there is a good chance you would buy your favourite "dream" vehicle just because you can, not because it's environmentally friendly or fuel efficient. However, there are other people that would look at the question from the point of view that they could buy any vehicle they want (regardless of price), not that they would have unlimited money run or maintain it. And for this reason many would choose a vehicle that would not cost them a lot to run, and/or be environmentally friendly. Yes, if I had unlimited resourses, I would buy a Sky Car and just fly everywhere. Since I don't, I would be inclined to buy an Alternative Fuel vehicle.

I still think that respondents are not opining from the premise of the original post’s comment “Given that money were no object” as the starting point. If you really thought about it and were being truthful I think that some would make a very different claim to what they would drive. Like I said in my earlier post, “give them Bill Gates’ or Oprah’s money and I would bet a year of pay that they would increase their “carbon footprint” over night”. Hell, even Oprah bought a gold plated toilet just because she could. Those that say that if they had great wealth they would still drive their 20 year old car are kinda like the guy who wins the 200 million dollar Mega Lotto and when asked by the news reporter what he plans to do with his new money the guy says he’s gonna get a new riding lawn mower. Give me a break, he’ll hire a full time landscaper to care for his lawn just like the guy with the 20 year old car will be driving a new Lamborghini to the Quickie Mart. (He may still own the old car but he’ll have it restored for 100 grand and park it in his 10 car garage).

Dexter, the answer to your question is simple: emissions. The cars of today get better mileage (per pound of vehicle) and have lower emissions.
It's funny how in this country Monday-morning environmentalists judge a car more by its mileage than its emissions; heaven forbid the day they catch on to that fact because people like you and me will get looked down upon for driving old technology that is 'polluting our skies' or some such nonsense.
I feel that buying a new car — not because you HAVE to but because you WANT to — is more environmentally destructive than sticking with the same ol' trusty companion for a decade or more. Whatever improvements in emissions controls (which harm mileage) are negated by the fact that someone just built a whole new freakin' car that is replacing a still serviceable model.
But then, like most folks of moderate or better income, I'm guilty of doing the same thing. :(

I like the sound of what GM is trying to accomplish with the Volt and also like what I'm reading about new turbo Diesels. I've owned a non turbo Diesel that I liked and am now driving a Chevy Lumina 3.1 V6 that is comfortable and gets 28 to 34 MPG on highway trips. Something similar to the Lumina but with a new generation turbo Diesel engine would be interesting. GM has proven they are capable of getting good mileage and comfort relative to vehicle size. I think people who will only consider the same make as they have been driving should look around. There have been some major changes over the years. I don't think any one company always has the best car.

I would keep what I have; my 20 year old car gets the same if not better mileage than the new stuff on the market with the big price tag. I wonder why 20 years ago the car manufacturers were able to make a car that got over 20 mpg...here in 2008 it is very hard to find a decent size car that gets over 20-24 mpg. Makes one wonder why they want $20,000 plus for a vehicle.

And the results are in...
17414 59% vs 9445 32% prefer killing the environment and eventually everything that resides within it including us over purely selfish reasons. All the cars within the group of 59% can be produced as an alternative fuel and if you had all the money in the world you could even imagine a flying car, maybe even one that goes back in time. Thinking outside of the box is to much for some and it's the reason why we're in this big mess today.

Well, after the 17th, we will see how much OPEC can hurt us once again. I know this isn't the Forum, but the message has to be spread out to everyone. OPEC intends on cutting up to 2 million Barrels per day, and with oil already up over $6.00 per barrel ( check cnbc.com ) for the week, and gas has climbed back over $1.05 from .92 cents for the week. OPEC plan is to make cuts on the 17th and since the contract front month ends on the 20th of every month, the next front month will not look so bad on paper ( locking in Feb 09 prices in the $50 dollar range ), but the climb upward will start. NOW MORE THAN EVER WE NEED TO DO THE THINGS TO MAKE THEIR CUTS LESS EFFECTIVE BY CONSERVING, OTHER FUEL SOURCES, OTHER ENERGY SOURCES, DRILLING, IMPROVE OTHER ENERGY WE HAVE IN ABUNDANCE ( COAL, OIL SHALE, OIL SANDS ) OR LESS BE PREPARED FOR GAS PRICES GOING UP AGAIN. AND ONE OTHER NOTE ( SORRY ABOUT CAPS, BUT THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT, IF OIL GETS TO THE $75-$85 RANGE, IRAN WILL BE ABLE TO CONTINUE TO FUND ITS WORK ON NUCLEAR "ENERGY". THEY HAVE MADE IT KNOWN THEY WANT US DEAD AND IF THEY CAN COMPLETE THIS, WE ARE IN TROUBLE. THEY WILL NOT SET OFF A NUCLEAR BOMB, BUT THEY WILL MAKE A "DIRTY" BOMB THAT WILL BE WORSE THAN A NUCLEAR BOMB. I HAVE EXPERIENCE WITH NUCLEAR, CHEMICAL, AND BIOLOGICAL WEAPONS FROM MY TRAINING WITH THE ARMY). GOD HELP US.

I'm 6'6", so the primary factor for me with ANY vehicle is headroom and legroom. So many vehicles put in the fancy center consoles. Unfortunately, I can't drive those because I can't get my legs under the dash.
