I'm not willing to go out of my way Less than 2 miles (3 km) 2 - 4 miles (3 - 6 km) 4 - 6 miles (6 - 10 km) 6 - 10 miles (10 - 16 km) More than 10 miles (16 km) It depends on other factors as well I don't purchase motor fuel Post your thoughts about this poll below.

If the price is right I will fill up. I drive a SUV so any help is helpful.

Drive 5 miles each way thats 10 miles round-trip. If you get 20 MPG city (which most do not) it would take you 1/2 gallon to get "cheap" gas at 3.80 per gallon and a 15 gallon (some cant even fit that much) fillup total savings? $3.00(15 gal x 20c p/gallon) - ($1.90= 1/2 gallon of gas) a whopping $1.10. For what 10 20 30 minutes of your life? That is hilarious.I bet most of you would not do any of the following things for a $1.10 but save on gas and whoohoo. you all get excited. 1) after you get home from work park in your driveway for 20 min 2) sit at your kitchen table for 15 min doing nothing 3) wait an extra 10 min in a grocery line to save $1.10 4) stay on hold with your doctor/CC/whatever for an extra 10 minutes No one would do any of those things for $1.10. You know why? Because you would consider it a waste of time. WHICH IT IS JUST LIKE "SAVING" ON GAS. But spend 10-20 minutes round trip to get "cheap" gas and you have a line of crazies willing to do the same.

I try and watch for the lower.

I will not drive over 5 miles to save a few cents. I will plan my route according to the gas prices.

When my tank is very low, I add about $5 in state to get me to the next state's gas station. I shop at other stores enroute to the next state and in the next state. Other times, coming home from work, I stay on the expressway to the next state, fill up, then return a shorter more direct route that saves mileage and gas. The gas gauge needle is still on full when I arrive at home and even when I arrive to work the next day. [Edited by: Blackfeet at 12/11/2011 9:09:05 AM EST]

More than 10 miles, but it wouldn't be "out of my way". Sometimes you can use up all the savings if you were driving a gas guzzler if you detour too far.

If you figure gas cost only, that's spending close to $1 to save $2-3.50. If you add in all the other costs of owning a car, you may do no more than break even (figure the IRS allowance of 56 cents per mile, and a 2 mile one way trip comes to $2.24). Otoh if, say, the gas is at Sam's and I can save money on groceries there, then the savings on gas is a bonus that makes the trip even more worthwhile. In my real life situation, I drive a circuit that passes by 2-4 sets of gas stations, one of which usually has reasonably priced gas. Since I have to fill up 2-3 times each week, it is a matter of keeping a watchful eye on these places and stopping appropriately.

What would a person do those 5-10 minutes otherwise, catch a few minutes of commercials on commercial paid over the air TV? I'd rather save $5. A penny saved is penny earned. Surely any one posting on this site is willing to go at least an extra block for a 20¢/gal savings. Get your head examined if won't go even an extra block for that kind of savings. I've seen people not bother to go to the other side of a street for a 5¢/gal savings. That's just plain incomprehensible. Yogi Bear
