Who loses when transportation trust fund goes broke in 2013?

GasBuddy Blog -- It's no secret that America needs jobs and our roads and transportation infrastructure needs repair. Every level of government -- federal, state and local-- says they're coming up short.

Because Congress is unwilling to increase the federal gas tax (18.4 cents per gallon), AP reports that tolls are likely going to be the next logical target of attention. The states lose. This is a federal tax for the most part and the last time I checked the USA is broke.
The Feds will stop distribution as they know what is best, correct?

We have to have money to keep our roads ... Like other trust funds the money has taken flight to other areas besides roads. Like airports. Tax per gallon instead of a percent tax has piled on with troubles. Where are the grownups here?

The stimulus should have taken care of this matter. Remember, "shovel-ready?" That move will take years to recover from.

Take the gas tax money out of the general fund where it gets spent on everything besides infrastructure and put it back into the transportation budget

The road systems were built when corporations and the rich paid taxes. That has changed and this is the result.

Mass transit in cities. They receive 20% of the money without contributing to the revenues.

The word interstate leads to be recognized as a federal project. Maintenence is by the lowest bidder (well connected contractor). Unless there is a transportation policy the lobbyists will determine the condition of the road system.

The national (and state) infrastructures are in dire need of updating. If not kept up with, it will be hard to dig out of the "hole" they are creating

I say raise the federal tax to 20 cents even. At 9 million barrels a day that extra 1.6 cents would repair a lot of roads.

If the stupid, crooked lawyers of Congress would quit looking out for the free-loaders and filling their own pockets, there would be plenty of money to go where it should.

The same people who wind up paying for everything else will lose in this case also. Those people are the taxpayers. Let's face it, government has gotten to big for their britches.

Instead of looking to bleed the public dry and stop all manner of business that would require a person to drive, why not take the money that is in their budgets and actually show some restraint and control. I love how government's answer to every monetary problem is that "There is not enough, we need more." It's like the snake that started eating its own tail. I'm not one for anarchy, but the government needs to go down, so that we can start this process over again.

So have all the road tax just gone into general revenue to pay for Mrs Obama's trips for her friends instead of roads where it should of gone?

Not a fan of taxes or tolls, but pay to play is the best choice so far.

If the Democrats get control of both houses look for gas tax to go up, just like all the taxes are going up in California with the Democrats if full control.
